Art & Music

Frevo X Corman

In the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village, Frevo is a Michelin-star restaurant concealed behind a secret door in a beautiful modern art gallery, also owned by the restaurant. Having had the privilege of eating there several times, I was impressed with the design of the restaurant’s intimate interior. The attention to detail, from the lighting to the wall color to the furniture and fixtures, is flawless. And, of course, the food is superb. Frevo’s impeccable taste extends to their gallery as well, with as much focus placed on the exhibit space as on the restaurant hidden behind one of the paintings.

Richard Corman’s portrait photography is intensely focused on the human spirit. Richard has a unique ability to see the compelling gifts in young artists which has led him to working relationships with Madonna, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring at the dawn of their careers.

I worked with Richard previously on Virgin Spirit – a celebration of art, music, and fashion, featuring never-before-seen portraits of Madonna from the early eighties. Richard next projects were the exhibition of unpublished portraits of Haring and Basquiat. While the gallery at Frevo had previously only exhibited paintings, I felt that the photos of these two iconic artists would seem right at home at Frevo, since they both created much of their work in this neighborhood in the early 1980s.

After seeing Richard’s work, Bernardo and Franco (Frevo co-owners and Chef, respectively) agreed to meet with Richard. It was a perfect match – Richard loved the respect these two restaurateurs had for the artists they exhibited, and the quality of their gallery space was a testament to that. The boys at Frevo loved the connection of Basquiat, Haring, and Greenwich Village. The rest is history.

I produced two exhibitions of Richard Corman’s work at Frevo.
